Strain Insulator for Overhead Lines
Composite strain insulators for pole guys and tensioning, 10 kV, 90 kN and 120 kN.
- Rated voltage
- 10 kV
- Mechanical load
- 90 and 120 kN
- Overall height
- 200 mm
- Creepage
- 200 mm
A strain insulator sits in the guy wire that holds a pole against the pull of the line. It insulates the anchor from the live side and takes the whole tension of the guy, so the rating is mechanical, not electrical.
The composite type is a short rod with a moulded housing and no porcelain to shatter. The two types here share the same external dimensions and differ in mechanical rating, 90 kN and 120 kN.
Porcelain strain insulators of the J series are made for the same duty, in sizes from J-5 to J-160.
Reading the Type Code
The type reads as body, voltage and mechanical load:
- JH
- Composite strain insulator
- 10
- Rated voltage, kV
- 90 / 120
- Mechanical failing load, kN
Specifications
Two ratings are published. Dimensions are nominal, with the tolerance given.
| Type | Overall heightmm | Insulator heightmm | Creepagemm | Mechanical failing loadkN |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JH10-90 | 200 ± 20 | 80 ± 5 | 200 ± 50 | 90 |
| JH10-120 | 200 ± 20 | 80 ± 5 | 200 ± 50 | 120 |
Creepage is quoted with the tolerance published in the catalogue, not as a nominal value.
Choosing a Type
Match the Guy
The type is chosen by the guy tension, not by the line voltage: both types here are 10 kV and differ only in mechanical load.
Composite or Ceramic
The composite body does not shatter when a wire is cut under load. The porcelain J series is cheaper where that risk is not a concern.
Every unit is tensile-tested before it is packed, and each type is type-tested before it is offered for supply.
