Shackle Insulator
Shackle insulators for low-voltage lines, bolted through the centre hole with the conductor tied between the two sheds.
- Rated voltage
- 0.5 kV
- Diameter
- 60–110 mm
- Dry flashover
- 14–22 kV
- Mechanical failing load
- 5–12 kgf
A shackle insulator has two wide sheds with the conductor tied into the groove between them, and a hole through the middle for a bolt. It is the cheapest way to insulate a 0.4 kV line and it is still the common fitting on rural distribution.
Four sizes are made, from 60 mm to 110 mm in diameter. Because the conductor is tied rather than clamped, the tie is part of the insulation — the type is chosen by the wire size and the tie used.

Flashover values are power-frequency. The mechanical figure is the failing load of the body in kgf, as published.
Choosing a Type
Low-voltage Use
The rated voltage is 0.5 kV. These are distribution fittings, not line insulators — do not put them on a 10 kV arm.
Tie Size
ED-1 and ED-2 take the heavier ties; ED-3 and ED-4 are for small service drops.
Every piece is flashover-tested before it is packed, and each type is type-tested before it is offered for supply.
