Zinc Oxide Arrester
Gapless metal-oxide surge arresters in a silicone housing, for system voltages from 3 kV to 110 kV.
- System voltage
- 3 and 10 kV
- Arrester rating
- 5 and 17 kV
- Residual voltage
- 16–50 kV
- Housing
- Silicone rubber
A gapless arrester holds the line voltage across a stack of zinc oxide discs. Below a threshold the discs pass almost no current; above it they go conductive and dump the surge to earth, then recover.
There is no series gap, so there is nothing to erode or to adjust. The housing is silicone rubber moulded over the stack: sealed against moisture, hydrophobic on the surface, and light enough to hang from a bracket.
The table gives the distribution types at 3 kV and 10 kV. Station arresters up to 110 kV are built in the same pattern with a taller stack.
Reading the Type Code
The type reads as arrester, housing, discharge current and voltage class:
- Y
- Metal-oxide surge arrester
- H
- Polymer (silicone) housing
- 5
- Nominal discharge current, kA
- W
- Gapless
- S / Z
- Distribution / station application
- 17 / 50
- Rated voltage, kV / residual voltage at nominal discharge current, kV

DC reference voltage and residual voltages are quoted at the values printed in the catalogue. Operating conditions: altitude up to 2 000 m, ambient −40 °C to +40 °C, supply frequency 48–62 Hz.
Choosing a Type
Gapless Design
Without a series gap the discs carry the operating voltage continuously, so there is no gap setting to drift and no electrode to erode.
S or Z
S types are distribution arresters with a 100 A rectangular capacity; Z types take 150 A and are used on station equipment.
Mounting
The polymer housing can be hung in any orientation. It contains no oil and no pressure relief, so a failure does not vent.
Every unit is routine-tested before it is packed, and each type is type-tested before it is offered for supply.
