Porcelain Pin Insulator
Pin insulators for 6 kV to 35 kV overhead lines, mounted on an iron or wooden cross-arm with the conductor tied into the top groove.
- Rated voltage
- 6–35 kV
- Creepage
- 120–533 mm
- Thread
- M16 and M20
- Mounting
- Iron or wooden cross-arm
A pin insulator sits on a spindle fixed through the cross-arm. The conductor is tied into the groove at the top, so the porcelain carries the conductor and holds it clear of the earthed arm at the same time.
The range runs from 6 kV to 35 kV. The mounting letters decide whether the insulator comes with its own foot and which cross-arm it fits; the high-pollution types carry a longer creepage path at the same voltage.
Reading the Type Code
The first letters set the body type; the letters after the dash set the mounting:
- P
- Conventional pin insulator
- PQ1 / PQ2
- Extra insulation for medium and very heavy pollution
- T / M
- With foot, for an iron or wooden cross-arm
- L / LT
- Porcelain screwed onto the foot, with or without the foot
- B
- Semiconducting glaze over the body above the side groove
Specifications
Values published for each type. A dash marks a value the catalogue does not give for that type.
| Type | Minimum creepagemm | Diametermm | Thread | Lightning impulse withstandkV | Wet power-frequency withstandkV | Power-frequency puncturekV | Cantilever failing loadkN |

| PQ1-10L | 255 | 140 | – | 90 | 40 | 130 | 10.6 |
Cantilever values are for the porcelain body. Impulse values for P-20T and P-35T are not given in the catalogue.
Choosing a Type
Creepage Choice
PQ1 is the medium-pollution body and PQ2 the very heavy pollution version; both carry a longer creepage path than the P type at the same voltage.
Thread Size
M16 is used on the 6 kV and 10 kV bodies; M20 on the 15 kV, 20 kV and 35 kV bodies.
Mounting Style
T types come with a foot for an iron cross-arm, M types for a wooden one, L types without a foot.
Every piece is mechanically and electrically routine-tested before it is packed, and each type is type-tested before it is offered for supply.
