Ceramic Rod SL

Solid porcelain rods with metal fittings at both ends, used as tension members on overhead lines and for busbar support in substations.

Rated voltage
10 and 15 kV
Tensile load
20–40 kN
Creepage
260–360 mm
Weight
4.0–5.2 kg

A ceramic rod is one solid porcelain body with a fitting cemented into each end. It works in tension only, so it is used where a suspension string would swing: guyed poles, wind-loaded sections, and busbar support inside a substation.

With no cap-and-pin joint there is no internal air space to puncture, and no shed to collect water between two metal parts. Five types are made, at 10 kV and 15 kV, with tensile ratings from 20 kN to 40 kN.

Reading the Type Code

The type reads as body variant, voltage and tensile load:

XS / XSC / SL
Ceramic rod insulator; XSC is supplied without iron fittings
10 / 15
Rated voltage, kV
20 / 30 / 40
Tensile load, kN

XS types are supplied with iron fittings at both ends; XSC is the all-porcelain body with none. The tensile figure is the rated load, not a proof test value.

Choosing a Type

  • Rod or String

A rod takes tension and nothing else. Where the fitting must also articulate — line strings on a tower — a cap-and-pin string is the right part.

  • Fitting Count

XS carries iron fittings at both ends. XSC is the bare porcelain body for customers who cement their own.

Every rod is tensile-tested before it is packed, and each type is type-tested before it is offered for supply.
